  • I have received a zero mark for my assignment because of a simple compilation error (or insert another problem here). Is this fair?I have published the marking criteria at the very beginning of the semester. Also, I have a Web based assignment submission system which provides you a method to submit your assignments easiest possible way. You can resubmit your work as many times as you want until after the deadline passes (actually you can still submit after the deadline, but you will get marks deducted because of late submission). You don't even have to come to school to submit your assignment. Additionally, in the assignment handouts, I tell you how do I compile your assignments. All I want is: Whenever you make a change (even for a very trivial change), before submitting, recompile your assignment as recommended in the handouts to make sure that there is no error. That's all. Is this a big ask? I don't think so.
  • Can I get a supplementary exam for the unit XXXX? Supplementary exams are offered by the department if the student narrowly missed passing the unit in their last or next-to-last semester of enrolment and would otherwise graduate (max 1 unit for Masters). They are not automatic and the decision is made by the Board of Examiners. Typically they need 40 or more to get an offer. The student will be considered when we have their final semester results, and sent a letter offering the supp if we decide to offer it. From 2005, such exams will be held in the supp/def exam periods in August and January.

  • I have sent you an email, why haven't you replied to me? Unfortunately email is not an instant communications medium anymore. I get too many emails, far too many than I can reply every working day. I try to read all of them though. If you are one of my students, please come and see me during my consultation hours, chat with me during the short break between the lectures, or after the lectures. There are also tutorial hours to have discussions.
